Alder Hey and Liverpool Heart and Chest NHS Trust needed to roll out Power BI across the joint analytics team. As part of the roll out, the Associate Director for Data and Analytics needed to utilise and adopt Statistical Process Control (SPC) charts much more easily and efficiently for their monthly Integrated Performance Reports.
EasySPC is BCN’s very own Microsoft Certified Power BI custom visual that enables users to create Statistical Process Control (SPC) charts using their own data. EasySPC helps organisations use SPC to monitor process variation, enabling faster identification and more targeted action of potential bottlenecks in processes and operational activities.
The use of colour in EasySPC to identify special cause variation was a key benefit for the team. By being able to clearly highlight to the board that there had been special cause variation was a game-changer, something that was much harder to illustrate prior to the use of EasySPC. In addition, the fact that the team can re-baseline easily made a massive difference, again something that was not as successfully achieved prior to EasySPC.
Alder Hey Children’s Hospital
Alex Garbett, Associate Director of Data and Analytics, discusses his experience using EasySPC and how it has enabled the Trust to improve how they monitor process variation, enabling faster identification and more targeted action of potential bottlenecks in processes.
Following the Integrated Digital (iDigital) service of Alder Hey and Liverpool Heart and Chest NHS Trust (Liverpool Heart and Chest) both of the Trusts informatics teams work collaboratively, scaling their digital service provision.
Whilst Alder Hey had been using Power BI for longer than Liverpool Heart and Chest, the team which used Power BI were a very specific visualisation team, meaning knowledge around the use of Power BI was limited to a small subset of the wider team. The only experience the team had in creating SPC charts was replicating templates from the national ‘Making Data Count’ program.
In addition to rolling out Power BI across the joint analytics team, the Associate Director for Data and Analytics wanted to increase the utilisation and adoption of SPC charts to the wider team. The main reason for SPC adoption was for the Trust’s Integrated Performance Report (External Board Report detailing the overall performance of the organisation), making a move away from the standard RAG rating, towards an SPC approach.
BCN’s EasySPC software was the solution. It helps organisations use SPC to monitor process variation, enabling faster identification and more targeted action of potential bottlenecks in processes and operational activities
One of the benefits is that it’s easy to use. The Associate Director had previously used Tableau to create SPC charts so had no prior experience of using EasySPC in Power BI. Despite the lack of experience, the Associate Director was able to utilise EasySPC without additional training, immediately integrating the software across Alder Hey’s Data and Analytics team.
One analyst who works specifically on the Integrated Performance Report was able to illustrate special cause variation to the board, who were able to understand the report and the insights that the team aimed to illustrate. Within a few weeks, the team at Alder Hey were able to illustrate process improvement initiatives for the Trust in an intuitive and easy-to-understand way, improving the visualisation and subsequent analysis of data.
