Why East London NHS Foundation Trust developed EasySPC with BCN

Thousands of healthcare professionals use EasySPC to make decisions around quality improvement, but it all started with East London NHS Foundation Trust.

We’ve shared previously how East London NHS Foundation Trust (ELFT) saves 141 hours of staff time every single day by using EasySPC to produce its control charts. It’s been a huge success, but how did it all come about? Dr Amar Shah, Chief Quality Officer, tells us the story.

About ELFT

Founded in 2000, ELFT is a specialist NHS healthcare system which delivers mental health, primary care, inpatient and community care health services to a population of about 1.7m people across London and beyond, operating from 120 sites and staffed by 6,500 individuals.

Shifting away from tables

For over a decade, ELFT’s improvement journey has sought to use data more efficiently in supporting its efforts to provide the best care and outcomes for local people. From an early stage, the Board used information to drive decision-making, moving away from RAG-ratings towards a set of whole system measures. Using control charts, manually-created in Excel, made it significantly easier for the Board to identify areas which required attention. However, giving the Trust’s 300 teams the opportunity to view their own data proved tricky. With so much data in healthcare, it was clear an integrated solution was needed: “And that’s where we got a bit stuck.”

Developing a solution with BCN

With nothing available on the market which offered the capabilities required, ELFT partnered with BCN to develop EasySPC. Successfully integrating it into Power BI enabled teams to access data in one place and allowed them to spot issues fast. Today, Dr Shah and the team are beginning to look at predictive analytics through EasySPC, highlighting problems before they occur using early warning systems. It’s been a journey of evolution, he says. Everyone can see data in the same way and make decisions based on a good understanding of the variation which SPC charts provide in detail.

EasySPC: a global success

For Dr Shah, the experience has been really exciting and filled with pride: he’s proud that ELFT partnered with BCN for the project and proud that together they developed a tool which is now being used by organisations around the world, each who want to share their important data with teams in a simple way, enabling staff to make improvements in the care they deliver.
